What Is Postinor-1?

Postinor-1 has one blister sheet containing one flat white tablet. The tablet contains 1.5 milligrams of levonorgestrel progestogen and the following inactive ingredients: potato starch, maize starch, colloidal anhydrous silica, magnesium stearate, talc and lactose.

Postinor-1 is effective after one or several acts of intercourse in a row provided that all the acts have taken place within 72 hours preceding the intake of the drug. Postinor-1 is an emergency contraceptive only and is not intended to be used as a regular method of contraception. It does not work if you are already pregnant. It also does not prevent you from contracting sexually transmitted diseases.

It is estimated that Postinor-1 will prevent 79% of expected pregnancies when you take it within 72 hours of having unprotected sex. It will not prevent a pregnancy every time and is more effective if you take it as soon as possible after unprotected sex.  Postitor-1 is thought to work by: Preventing or stopping your ovaries from releasing an egg and preventing the sperm from fertilizing any egg you may have already released.

If another unprotected intercourse takes place after the use of Postinor-1 (also if this is during the same menstrual cycle), the tablet will not be effective and there is again the risk of pregnancy. Postinor-1 is not recommended for children. There is only limited information available on Postinor-1 when taken by women aged 14-16 years and no information on its use in younger women or children.

What You Need To Know About Postinor-1

• Postinor-1 is just one white and round tablet in one blister sheet. In other words, it is a single dose oral emergency contraceptive pill.

What Is Postinor-2?

Postinor-2 has one blister sheet containing two flat round white tablet. Each tablet contains 0.75 milligrams of levonorgestrel progestogen and the following inactive ingredients: potato starch, maize starch, colloidal anhydrous silica, magnesium stearate, talc and lactose.

Postinor-2 is not intended as a regular method of contraception. It is used to prevent pregnancy when taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. It is estimated that Postinor-2 will prevent 85% of expected pregnancies. 95% of expected pregnancies will be prevented if taken between 48 hours and 72 hours after unprotected intercourse. It is not accurately know whether Postinor-2 is effective if taken more than 72 hours after unprotected intercourse. Postinor-2 tablet may be used at any time within the menstrual cycle.

For effective result, Postinor-2 is supposed to be taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse. The sooner the tablet is taken, the more effective it is more likely to be. It is best to take it immediately after you receive it. The first tablet should be taken not later than 72 hours after intercourse, whereas the second tablet should be taken exactly or approximately 12 hours after the first tablet.

According to data of clinical studies, it is advisable to take the first tablet within 48 hours (but not later than 72 hour) after intercourse, since the efficacy of the drug decreases if more than 48 hours elapse between intercourse and drug ingestion. If vomiting occurs within 2 hours after drug intake, the dose must be repeated. No more than 4 tablets may be taken per month.

Postinor-2 is not recommended for children. There is only limited information available about Postinor-2 when taken by women aged 14-16 years and no information on its use in younger women or children. All medicines have side effects. Often they are not serious but sometimes they can be. You will need to talk to a doctor in case you experience severe side effects after taking any Postinor contraceptive drug.
