What Is Opening & Closing In Image Processing?
Opening and closing are two important operators from mathematical morphology. They are both derived from the fundamental operations of erosion and deletion. Like those operators they are normally applied to binary images, although there are also graylevel versions. Opening is generally used to remove small objects from the foreground (usually taken as the bright pixels) of an image, placing them in the background whereas Closing is generally used to remove small holes in the foreground, changing small islands of background into foreground.
The combination of opening and closing is generally used to clean up artifacts in the segmented image before using the image for digital analysis.
